Asia has a high diversity of waterbirds, including an increasing number of threatened species, many at risk of extinction. Conservation of these species and their habitats needs to be based on quality and current information on their distribution and trends. To address this need, the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) has been collating and disseminating information since 1987 to inform governments, conventions and the public.
