Sustainable water and sanitation solutions require sustainable water sources. Through their ability to store water, wetland ecosystems underpin water security in a region.

Between 2016 and 2020, Wetlands International South Asia with its partners implemented the ‘Watershed India’ program.  The program demonstrated the role of wetlands conservation as a source sustainability measure for improved management of water and sanitation services in the Tampara wetland basin in Odisha and Debkhal Chaur wetland basin in Bihar.

Through a series of capacity development and stakeholder engagements initiatives, communities were empowered with the knowledge and tools for scientific planning and management of water resources and WASH facilities. It helped them to achieve several positive outcomes for water security.

We hope that these approaches will be replicated and adopted by practitioners and policy-makers who aim at delivering sustainable WASH solutions.
