Prof. C. K. Varshney is a member of Governing Body of Wetlands International South Asia.
Prof. C. K. Varshney is Professor Emeritus, Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Distinguished Adjunct Professor, AIT, Bangkok, Chairman, Reviewers’ Panel of Climate Change Programme, and Member Expert Committee on Climate Change, Department of Science and Technology.
He worked with Government as Secretary, National Committee Environmental Planning and Coordination (NCEPC), the then apex policy planning and advisory body in Government on all environmental matters, long before Ministry of Environment was formed. He was Member-Secretary, Indian Delegation to 1972 Stockholm Conference on Human Environment, founder Secretary of National MAB Committee, Leader Indian Delegation to Inter-Governmental Meeting of Ramsar Convention, Groningen, Chairman UNESCO Task Force “Biosphere Reserves: defining scope and criteria”, and Chairman Alternate, EIA Consultants Accreditation Committee, Quality Council of India. He initiated a nation- wide research programme for the first in areas of ecology and conservation under the ages of National MAB Programme. He was Member, National Wetland Committee, Chairman, Wetland Research Committee and Member National Wetland Authority, Ministry of Environment and Forests.
Prof. Varshney was Visiting Professor at AIT, Bangkok, Senior Research Fellow at East-West Centre, Hawaii, Academic Coordinator LEED – India Programme – an initiative of Rockefeller Foundation and consultant to several international environment organisations.
He has authored and edited many books and published in internationally reputed journals. Prof Varshney is a Fellow of Indian Association for Air Pollution Control, recipient of prestigious “Vasvik Award” of Environment Sciences and Technology, and “Swami Pranavananda Saraswathi Award” of Environmental Sciences and Ecology.
