On January 4, 2024, a meeting was held in Wetlands International South Asia’s New Delhi office to discuss safe and just Earth system boundaries, with an emphasis on the Mahanadi Delta. Jane Madgwick, CEO of the Global Commons Alliance introduced the Planetary Boundaries framework and emphasised the importance of collaborative action.

The Wetlands International South Asia team, under the guidance of Dr Ritesh Kumar, Director Wetlands International South Asia, presented insights into the crucial role of wetlands in building resilience in the Mahanadi Delta. Emphasising their ecological significance, the team highlighted wetlands as natural buffers against climate challenges and vital habitats for diverse species.

NGO partners, including the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), actively contributed to the discussion. FES brought community perspectives on wetland conservation in the Mahanadi Delta, recognising the intersection of conservation efforts and local livelihoods.

The meeting fostered a collaborative approach to strike a balance between preserving the Mahanadi Delta’s unique ecosystems and uplifting dependent communities. The focus extended beyond ecological sustainability to social justice, acknowledging the necessity for harmonious coexistence between nature and society.

A shared commitment emerged to advance research, policy advocacy, and on-the-ground initiatives. The organisations present, along with community involvement, aim to make a meaningful impact in safeguarding the Mahanadi Delta’s wetlands within the framework of safe and just Earth system boundaries.
