The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change organized a workshop on ‘Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) for Indian Wetlands’ in collaboration with Wetlands International South Asia and GIZ from July 4-5, 2024, in Chandigarh.

The workshop aimed to familiarise the Ramsar Site managers from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand with the application of ‘METT for Indian Wetlands’ for adaptive management planning.

The workshop, attended by 35 participants, provided a comprehensive introduction to METT and its implementation process. Case studies on Wular Lake and Harike Lake were presented, providing insight into completing METT datasheets. Over two days, the site managers worked in state-specific groups to prepare draft METTs for their Ramsar Sites. Ten draft METTs were prepared, and three were revisited. The site managers presented their draft METTs, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of their management planning and outlining steps for improvement.

The workshop concluded with the states agreeing to produce pilot METT assessments for their Ramsar Sites. This was followed by a field visit to Sukhna Lake, a notified wetland in Chandigarh.
