Dr J.K. Garg is the Treasurer of Wetlands International South Asia.
He is the Director of Tribhuvan College of Environment and Development Sciences, Nalanda University Centre, Neemrana.
A pioneer in use of geospatial techniques for ecosystem analysis and environmental management in India, Dr Garg began his career in wetlands in 1976 as a young scientist at Space Applications Centre of the Indian Space Research Organization. He coordinated India’s first scientific wetland inventory for the country in 1998. He has also implemented projects on assessment and conservation planning for wetlands of international and national significance (such as Loktak, Deepor Beel, Nal Sarovar, Keoladeo National Park, and Tso Moriri Ramsar), biomonitoring of river systems (Yamuna), techniques and methodology development for appraisal of environmental impacts of mining, thermal power stations, river valley projects, environmental hazard zonation (landslides, forest fire), and assessment of Green House Gas Emissions from different ecosystems.
Since 2008, Dr Garg has joined Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, giving a fillip to research activities at the University School of Environment Management. He has been Dean of the School, and also Director, Centre for Disaster Management Studies. Presently, besides teaching, he guides students in the application of geospatial techniques for wetland characterisation and management, riverine landscape dynamics, forest fragmentation and ecosystem integrity, and urban heat island effect.
Dr Garg has more than 160 publications including in international/national journals, symposia and technical reports.
